the mangosteen is my favorite fruit it’s so good..even better than candy
i tried it for the first time when i went to vietnam for the first time to see my relatives.
it wasn’t good? cuz i always wanted to try the canned ones but it was too expensive….
I found mangosteen grown in the Philippines to be much bigger than the ones grown in Thailand.
If you can get it through customs, it’s best to buy the seedlings and grow them. Temperature and moisture is an issue for growing successful mangosteen plants.
The tree bears fruits every year. I was in the Philippines in August and they were harvesting them and sending off to the market.
The mangosteen tree could start producing a few fruits in as little as 5 years under optimal conditions, but will only produce about a dozen or so. every year after that the yield will increase, a mature tree around 12+ years can make over a 1000 fruits . there is an excellent mangosteen manual, available free to download, in PDF do an online search for ” DFID Mangosteen ” you should come upon the web site. that 186pg pdf has everything about Mangosteeen cultivation.
My mom used to know an old lady in Vietnam who took a hobby in growing mangosteens among other fruits. She said it took around 20 years for even a single fruit to ripen. The plant needs constant tropical humidity and temperature. You’ll very much find it more easily in Southeast Asia, in countries such as the Philippines. Mangosteen is the “queen of fruits.” (Also, durian is the “king of fruits.”)
So the tree takes 7+ years to grow? after the tree grows, the fruit will grow every year at certain times? or is it just a one time growing experience?
I have tried twice before to get seeds started here in the Caribbean without success. I just planted 10 more seeds. the main difficulty is the time it takes for seeds to get here by mail. viability of seeds is only a few day, couple weeks if kept moist. even if they sprout, I’ll have a long wait around 7+ years before I get any fruit. But it will be worth the wait
They are very good fruit, never had them canned but I have had actual fruit, it has a good and hard to describe taste.
I actually tried the can version and was disappointed.
Not only it is delicious, it is very high in antioxidant. It is juicy with incredible sweet and sour taste. Once you eat, you cant stop. I can eat 10-15 mangosteens in 5 minutes. You can buy canned mangosteen in the supermarket but I tried it before and it tastes difference when you eat fresh but at least you know how it tastes.
Best fruit ever!
I would LOVE to eat that fruit…It’s hard to come by in the caribbean…Hopefully someday I’ll be able to taste what’s been called the most delicious fruit in the world.
delicious. like grape soda!
Mangosteen is sweet and sour don’t let the purple bit touch your cloth is very hard to get rid off it!
Thanks for sharing your experience…. I will try 1 soon
